As I'm sure you are all aware I love to sketch and so over time I have narrowed a short list of my favorite place to sketch. What I love about sketching is you can easily do it anywhere. All you need is a sketchbook and some pencils, or in my case my I-pad. So gather your things and get ready to head out to find your perfect place to sketch.
Best Places to Sketch
I love sketching in my room all cozy under my covers with a nice cup of tea, I mean who wouldn't love that, but sometimes I feel I need to get out and explore. Therefore on this list, there are suggestions of different places you could go to sketch for all different types of scenarios. So give them a read and decide which would work best for you and your sketches.
1. A Cafe
This is probably the most obvious of all these suggestions. I love sketching in cafes, I think mostly because of the hustle and bustle around me. I like to be somewhere that is busy, and possibly the coffee and treats might have something to do with it too. Even though I love working in cafes, I won't if what I'm working on requires focus and or I have a specific deadline, because for all its perks a cafe can be distracting especially if your attention can easily be caught (cough ... Adhd... cough).
2. A Park
Obviously, this can only be done in good weather but when the weather comes through this is by far the most aesthetic place to sketch. Sitting out in the sun on a nice blanket, possibly with a bottle of wine. It's tranquil and almost magical. I spent 4 months in London Uk last year and the number of parks I had to choose from was insane. Maybe someday ill make a post on my favorite London parks. The only problem is the weather and bugs depending on where you live, but still a very good option in my opinion.
3. Public Transport
This one is interesting to me because it gives you a plethora of subjects to sketch, all positioned differently, all with uniquely different styles and energies. Meaning you can really expand your sketching skills. The only downside to this suggestion is you could look a little creepy if you continually stare at someone, so try to take sneakier glances and don't directly stare at someone. Remember a sketch doesn't need to be perfect or extremely detailed to be good.
4. On a busy Corner
Similarly to the previous suggestion, sketching while sitting on a busy street corner gives you plenty of different people to sketch. I personally also like to pick a corner that has interesting architecture around as well. So if there's no one to sketch you can sketch the buildings. However, be aware of your surroundings, make sure you're not in the way or in any danger of being trampled; and similarly to suggestion 2, make sure to dress weather appropriate.
5. The Library
I usually only go to a library to sketch when I'm on a tight deadline, or I have to make sure I focus. However, even for general sketching the library can be fun too. Of all these suggestions you're least likely to be disturbed in a library, so if you are looking for a peaceful sketching session a library is the place for you. I also enjoy the library because if I'm feeling stuck for inspiration, there are so many books I can read to help get some ideas flowing. Whether they be art books, fiction or non-fiction inspiration can be found anywhere.
I think that last sentiment can be applied to all these suggestions. Where ever you go to sketch try to find inspiration just by looking around. You could sketch a coffee mug in the cafe, a tree in the park, a group of friends on the subway, and the fancy building across the street. Inspiration is all around you, it can be found in the smallest and most mundane of things. So look around, what can you find to sketch?
